【4 th March, 2014 Leung Nga Wing】NOW TV business programme co-host Chiu Sin-chun said the government lacked foresight and long-term planning, causing development in Hong Kong remained unmoved, thus he could not see the success of Hong Kong.

The 2014-15 Budget was released last Wednesday. Many voices criticized Financial Secretary John Tsang for lessening the one-off measures and sweeteners.

Mr Tsang defended the budget by saying that the measures were proposed to securing a long-term expenditure growth, revenue base and savings for the future.

But Chiu deemed that the government has never well planned for the future.

“For instance, Kai Tak development should have started years ago, right after the new airport in Chek Lap Kok is opened,” he said, “but all we have now is merely a cruise terminal.”

“The government announced the Kai Tak land sale program only in recent time,” said Chiu, “but this should have done early in 1997.”

Considering the building of the third airport runway, Chiu said this is another example showing the unmoved development in Hong Kong.

“The debate has continued for 10 years, it would make no difference whether the new runway is built or not,” he added.

Chiu is a veteran business news reporter with over 30 years of experience. He has worked in various media institutions such as Hong Kong Economic Journal, RTHK, and Commercial Radio etc.

He is currently the co-host of NOW TV business program.
