Ni Kuang, a famous novelist better known as Ngai Hong, and Lau Tin Chi, a famous chat show host as well as former TVB official, said that colloquial language or even foul language is acceptable in writing. Today, Ni Kuang and Lau Tin Chi shared their attitudes on writing with students in Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Both of them are well-known celebrities, but they still modestly and humorously answer the students’ questions. They told the students that they should try to use different ways and styles in their writing.

Both Ni Kuang and Lau Tin Chi indicated that colloquial language is welcomed in writing. Ni Kuang said that the ways and styles of writing are not the norms to grade a piece of composition but it depends on whether it is alluring or not. Therefore, spoken language is acceptable to blend into novels in order to make it more attractive. He further explained that foul language can also be added into writing whenever there is necessary as it can better reflect human’s life and express one’s feeling. Thus, it is not necessary to avoid using foul language in writing. Lau Tin Chi also thinks that colloquial language or foul language can be able to make the work become lively and vividly.

And for the controversies on the Sex Column of the Chinese University Student Press, both Ni Kuang and Lau Tin Chi said that authorities were eroding freedom of speech in Hong Kong and it is absolutely not necessary to spark controversies over the society. Ni Kuang explained that sex is unavoidable that everyone including young people will have the chance to approach, thus, pornography should not be prohibited. Lau Tin Chi also thinks that it is appropriate to read pornography and he will not forbid his children to read it. Both of them think that it is a pity to impose restrictions on a campus newspaper but it is also the reality that students have to face.
