The Wang Chau housing saga aroused public concern, Eddie Chu, Legislator, attended an assembly at SYU on Tuesday talking about collusion between the government, businesses, village thugs and triads in this development plan.

Wang Chau public housing program has been developed since 2013. The Chief Executive Leung Chun Ying had promised to build 17,000 public housing, however, due to the opposition of local people in Wang Chau, the number of housing units was reduced from 17,000 to 4,000. The local residents needed to move before 2018. Chu said, the government should be candid when facing the opposition. However, the government did not put the Wang Chau housing saga under the sunlight, the transparency of this program was low. Chu said, the housing program was related to collusion between the government, businesses, village thugs and triads; the government should publish the truth of the housing program.

Chu said, he would use a reporter attitude to enter the LegCo, to collate the information for public and expose the hidden truth from the government, thus arousing public concern. Due to the public pressure of some issues, the government could take back the unfavorable policies of public. Chu said, he would try his best to oppose the policies that harm to publics’ interests, and wish the government understand that democracy was bigger than profits.

Originally planned to provide 17,000 flats, the govt has scaled it down to 4,000 after they failed to get support from rural leaders in three 'soft lobbying' meetings in 2013.

formerly a journalist, Chu said he would adopt the attitude of reporter to play his new role as legislator, collecting information and exposing the govt's hidden truth to the public and arousing their concern.
