The love life of Henry Tang, Hong Kong’s former chief secretary and chief executive hopeful, has been under the spotlight since he admitted having an affair. While it is widely believed that the issue would pose a severe threat to Tang’s prospect of becoming chief executive, Esme Lau, Public Affairs Manager of Power Assets Holdings Ltd., says that in the view of a public relations officer, Tang has done every thing he can do to deal with the scandal and the general public should just give him a break.

Henry Tang made a public statement two weeks ago, saying that he has made a mistake in his personal life and he has already gained forgiveness from his wife. Despite the extensive media coverage, Tang refused to make any further comments regarding his “flaws” in love life. As one of the top public relations practitioners in Hong Kong, Esme pointed out that Tang has already taken the right measures to end the public’s speculation.

‘ As a political figure, Henry Tang has answered all the questions Hong Kong people need to know. On some occasions, being completely honest may not be a wise choice,’ says Esme.

However, Leung Tin Wai, Professor and Head of Journalism Department of Hong Kong Shue Yan University expressed his disapproval when Esme was addressing Tang’s affair. ‘Henry Tsang is not a good fit for Chief Executive. He has no political wisdom at all,’ says Leung. ‘Bill Clinton has been subject to sexual misconduct allegations as well throughout his career, yet he was so competent that he could survive all those scandals, not like Henry Tang. ’

Esme also states that most people tend to think that public relations officer should be the one to blame when a crisis happens. She emphasized that public relations practitioners are just taking a supporting role in a corporate and other factors should also be considered. ‘ We may provide professional consulting services to our own company, but changes cannot be made without the permission of administrators. That is what makes our work so challenging.’
