Non-government welfare organizations should be creative and persistent to achieve goals, the C.E.O. of Yan Oi Tong said.

In the seminar held in Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday, Lu Tak Ming said passion, persistent, collaboration, creativity and communication are important for someone who manages the NGO.

He further explained by the case of Green Adventure, a project he worked in 2010 for secondary students, “We wanted to call the attention of students about environmental protection. Instead of old ways such as competitions and talks in schools, something more creative and effective was just what we want. I decided to do something special,” said Lu.

Lu said his goal was to have a sponsored trip for secondary students to Antarctic Great Wall Station, but he had no sponsorship after many attempt of pressuring enterprises, which mostly stated the project being “not cost-effective”.

He finally looked for funds from Yan Oi Tong’s directors, and he was able to collect 14 million dollars from directors and 3 millions dollars from the chairman, who at first did not support Lu’s idea. With the 25 million dollars Lu gained totally, 22 students were able to go on the trip to the South Pole, came home with changes for good, Lu said.

“The circle of academic was so astonished and many companies offered their sponsorship voluntarily for the next year’s Green Adventure. We already have been to North Pole, Mount Everest and, this year, Kenya,” said Lu.

“Comparing to the government, there is no burden for a NGO to creative like a laboratory because NGO has no fear to failure, hence I always want to do something new,” he said.
