Experienced PR Esme Lau, who is now the public affairs manager of the Power Assets Holdings Ltd., says that PR is the “eyes, ear, mouth and nose” of a company.

Working as a PR for more than 20 years, Esme thinks her job is very challenging and that is what keeping her for so long too. “We do not have any fixed formula. Things happened and solved this time, will not be the same next time. All I can do is to be very careful.” To her, PR does not have the key to success and it depends on others. What she can do, is to maintain the smooth two-way communication.

“We are not the most major department in the company. But our function is special. We act like its eyes, ear, mouth and nose.” She explained that, though they provide supplementary services, they deal a lot. “Every morning, we read all the newspaper keep updating the public opinions and cut out to notice our head.” They need to speak to the public too. “But people now expect a subject officer to come out, thus we adjust to be an adviser in messaging like what and how to speak.”

“Do not look for work life balance,” advised Esme to people interested in it. She explained that a PR job is not that easy. New-comers should be capable to spot the core problem of the crisis and be eager to tackle themselves.
