Loh Chan, the CEO of DBC, mentioned today that DBC would set up the first 24-hour radio news channel in Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, there are 4 radios using or going to use this new type of broadcasting, including RTHK, Phoenix U Radio, Metro Broadcasting and Digital Broadcasting Cooperation (DBC). Among these 4 radios, DBC is now having the most channels.

Loh, who attended a talk held by Hong Kong Shue Yan University today, said the direction of the news channel will be fair and balanced and obey the core of ethics. However, he then was criticized by the students that with Wong Cho-Bau, a member of the national committee of CPPCC, being the biggest shareholder, it would be hard to keep the news channel fair. Loh replied that they would not be Wenwei or Ta Kung Pao or Apple Daily, which means that they would try hard to be fair, ‘you can download our app and listen to our programmes. If you have any complain, just dial my number!’

Loh also mentioned that their new 24-hour news channel would have its own news team, and would not buys news from other news agencies, for example Now TV. He explained that it was a decision made by the new shareholders. Loh responded to some students’ questions on the high production cost of news channel, ‘in fact, the hourly average production cost of news channel is even cheaper than other channels. Also, some sound bites from the news report can be used on other programmes of other channels.’
