Loh Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Broadcasting Corporation Hong Kong Limited (DBC), said news production should be independent and fair, adding that the radio show would target the elderly as a great market potential.

DBC is the first commercial digital radio broadcasting station in Hong Kong. It now has 7 channels. All seven channels had been in full operation since this September.

Loh said that DBC is just a social platform, and that they will try to explore more possibility and focus more on developing social media application platform. They will target the elderly audience because they found that such type of show is not common in Hong Kong. Research has shown that the life expectance of human is getting longer and longer. Elderly in Hong Kong is now 1/7 of the total population and will become 1/4 after 20 years.

Loh said that they got strong spending power so not willing to buy a digital radio is not a concern. Moreover, DBC is cooperating with some charity to handsel digital radio to the elderly for free.

In the past, DBC did not have their own news production crew. All the news released in the news channel were mainly bought from other TV or radio news channels like NowTV. After changing new shareholder, they launched a 24 hour news channel and start to form their own news production crew which mainly target on public transport drivers and passengers. Loh added that one advantage of the news channel is they can ‘reuse’ the sound bite on other channels.

In the future, DBC plan to install digital radios on 20 thousand mini bus and taxi, which would cost twenty million in total. Loh said, if they receive positive promotion effect, would plan to install more on public transport.
