The Digital Broadcasting Corporation (DBC) has sparked off their wave of business expansion by launching seven new 24-hour on-going channels on September 16, catering a more critical base of audience in face of the thread of the growing online radio channels.

“We should admit that after a couple of years, the line between those licensed radio channels and online radios become more blurred,” Stephen Loh Chan, the Chief Executive Officer of the DBC who had just taken office, said on a general assembly in Hong Kong Shue Yan University this afternoon.

Stephen said, as different channels are all heading to the era of multi-media development, the company excels the industry’s combat through absorbing a more critical base of audience, rather than the mass audience.

“Content is still the king”, he said. The newly launched channels include a multilingual channel, which target the ethnic minority in Hong Kong like the Pilipinos and the Indonesians.

Also, in response to the aging population problem in town, DBC aims at catering the elderly population who may have long been left out by the mass media.

As one of the forerunning digital broadcasting radio channels in town, critics concern whether the company’s editorial independence would be infringed by the presence of Wong Chor Biu, one of the DBC’s shareholders who is also a National committee of the Communist Party of China Central Committee (CPCCC).

In regard of this, Stephen claimed, “Until this moment, I enjoy a big free hand.”

“He wouldn't have chosen to remain as an investor rather than a member in the broad of directors if he intended to do so,” he said.

But Loh adopted a wait-and-see attitude towards his new team and would rather prefer a progressive than aggressive approach towards the company’s news channel development, as most of the staffs at the DBC’s office are still green.
