Dawn of the traditional press, rise of internet communication

Cheung Kai Wing, Kevin 25-10-2011

With the rise of the internet, people keep saying that it’s already the dawn of the newspaper industry. Li Fang, vice chief editor of Tencent.com, pointed out that the trend of further development will no longer stick with the old press method, but with usage of internet included, just like Tencent Weibo.

((Li mentioned as the next media generation would be like ‘everyone can be the reporter’))). He mentioned that with a platform like Tencent Weibo, users communicate and share opinions on the platform. The sharing of the opinions indeed helps to set up the public agenda by themselves, unlike the old time when the public agenda was set by the press and journalists. The message receivers themselves decide what they want to know and what they are concerned with the most.

When using the 723 Wenzhou Train Crash as an example, Li explained how ((Weibo greatly do a push in the development of citizen journalists)). He pointed out that the accident was reported first on Weibo, and then the television followed. ‘The crash news was reported 20 minutes earlier than the traditional media did,’ said Li.

Facing this great change in the living environment of the press industry, how can the traditional media survive? Li answered this question with no answer ((can't answer a question with no answer)), but just advised the traditional media needed to find a new way out. --095096 2011年10月25日 (二) 22:35 (UTC)
