The Chairman of Lantau Development Alliance (LaDA) said the alliance aims to develop Tung Chung as a new convention and exhibition district, and it would also solve the problem of saturated tourism in the urban area.

As the visitors of Hong Kong increase every year, which forms pressure to both the hotel and tourism sector and retail. There is great urge in solving the existing problem. Allen Ha, who is the chairman of LaDA, said the conflict between Mainland people and citizens mainly because of the policy of Individual Travel. It brings lots of tourists to visit Hong Kong, however, the city do not have enough facilities to serve them. ‘This is an unbalance phenomenon of demand and supply,’ Han said. He proposed a development plan, which is known as ‘Orlando’, in the hope to serve visitors and soothe the current situation.

Ha, who is also the CEO of AsiaWorld-Expo Management Limited, continued to elaborate Tung Chung position. ‘There are only 3,000 hotel rooms and it cannot serve numerous tourists,’ Ha said, ‘Tourists prefer to stay in Tsim Sha Tsui.’ The urban area is nearly all developed and there is no sufficient land remains, Ha hoped the governments consider establishing Lantau Island, as the development in Zhujiang Delta would bring more business opportunity to Hong Kong.

Ha regarded AsiaWorld-Expo as a middle class facility, while Hong Kong Conventional and Exbition Center at Wanchai as a high class facility. ‘If we make Tung Chung as a middle class serving area, tourist can visit the district they are willing to go,’ Ha continued, ‘they would not just stay in Tsim Sha Tsui and other urban area.’ He kept on explaining that the spending power of middle class should not be neglected. ‘Many cities want to gain profit from this category of visitor, if we build more malls and hotel, we can fit the target group’s need.’ He raised example that premium outlet would attract tourist in a relatively low price for a brand product, and if there are more accommodations for visitors to choose, the new town could be bloomed and suit the demand of the city.
