Dvelopment direction of DBC and DAB

Loh Chan, the C.E.O of DBC, who was the guest speaker at Hong Kong Shue Yan University today, said "content is king" and that he focuses on the future of DBC and DAB in the talk, especially the development direction.

Nowadays, digital audio broadcasting (DAB) had covered 80% of Hong Kong family. This kind of technology is using AAC and 64kbps broadcasting, so the audio quality can be as high as CD. Besides, DAB can provide real time text and low resolution images at the same time.Loh said that DBC has 7 different channels for variety audiences, such as news, finance, race, music, school… He believes that they can cover almost audiences’ needs.

When talking about the cost of digital radio, Loh expresses that DBC has a plan for elderly. DBC is contacting with many companies for buying their digital radio as a gift for customer. Also, some NGOs are willing to pay part of the radio cost for the elderly, so that DBC can make sure old people will get a chance to enjoy digital broadcasting in a lowest cost way.

At the end of 2013, DBC will send 20,000 set of digital radio for taxi and minibus to promote their program. All drivers will be their targeted audiences of transportation channel. This kind of advertisement will cost around $200,000, but Loh believes that the cost will be cover soon by cooperate with other companies. Loh agrees that DBC is facing lots of competitor, and the only way to win is focus on broadcasting content. “Content is king,” audiences have their own way to judge and response to different king of media content. If DBC want to stand firm in electronic media profession, the best way will be pay more on content.
