Digital radio broadcasting for the elderly

By Jess Lau

As more people move into retirement in coming decades, some media companies are seeing the population as a key to success.

“It’s all about distribution,” said Loh Chan, the chief executive of Digital Broadcasting Corporation. “By working with different charity groups, we give out sponsored or even free digital radio receivers to the elderly in Hong Kong.”

Loh continued that with better medical treatment and health standards, life expectancy has been rising, so that after retirement, people may have even more leisure time. Loh pointed out that the elderly and their spending power should not be ignored. Developing the company’s radio program content in such aspect might be a good idea.

According to Loh, there is a lack of radio program specially designed for the elderly in Hong Kong. In order to attract new audiences from the elderly, some new features, such as Chinese opera, will be added into the program.

Loh further pointed out that working in digital media industry is a completely different picture when compared to working in the printed media industry. “You have to react fast, and make decision instantly when something happened which is beyond your expectation.” He stressed the importance of common sense and the code of ethics when doing interviews. --115094 2013年9月17日 (二) 23:40 (UTC)
