Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city with a diverse range of culture and a thriving arts scene, it is impossible to be a cultural desert, says the Director of Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre.

“There are a lot of cultural activities in Hong Kong throughout the year and I have joint many of them in the last two years, such as antiques and arts exhibitions, rock and roll concerts and cultural movies,” said Hu Ching Fang at an assembly at Shue Yan University today.

In recent years, many new venues and facilities for culture have opened up, such as the PMQ arts space in Sheung Wan, where local artists and creative industries can display their works. In addition, the Hong Kong Museum of Art in Tsim Sha Tsui is undergoing a major expansion that will increase its exhibition space by 40 per cent. Hongkongers have also come to accept graffiti art, pieces from French street artist Invader are all across the city.

Hu said she knew some of the Hong Kong cultural creators who have been working hard to write and create arts. However, limited resources and attention were allocated on cultural creation.

Cultural development has been commercialized that the government focuses heavily on the income of arts. “The one thing I feel disappointed is that only famous troupes are appreciated and being invested, minority artists are not recognized,” said Hu.

At the assembly, Hu also mentioned that teens have no responsibility to push forward cultural development, they just need to enjoy what they are doing and keep looking for fun activities to do, said Hu.

‘Tiger Mums’ do not accept all kinds of failure in their children’s development. They need them to get a prize in a competition, enrol drama which would only benefit their career development, said Hu.

“The most precious thing of arts is failure is nowhere to be found, for only pleasure can been seen in it,” said Hu.
