Director of the Teledifusão de Macau S.A., João Leong Kam Chun has said the full government funded television channel is remaining totally news independent.

“Even it’s funding us, the Macau government is not interfering TDM’s operation at all.” Leong said at a seminar hosted by the Dept. of Journalism & Communication of Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

“Social status of Macau is different from Hong Kong, so do our news culture. Macau is now fairly prosperous and secure. People rarely feel unsatsified. So that we don’t have suicides happens everyday, not to mention protestions and riots,” Leong explained.

News section of Teledifusão de Macau includes a rather high proportion of government news.

Peacekeeper Leong said another reason is the way how government implements its policy. “Unlike Hong Kong, when Macau government has any ideas, she usually informs the public via news media. Then she listen to people’s reaction before put the policies into operation. In this way Macau has rather less argumentative issues, the society is rather harmonic,” Leong added.

TDM has lately reformed. Information channel has replaced lifestyle channel with more news contents. But a 24-hour news channel is yet to accomplish.

With a news team of only 112 headcounts, Leong admitted TDM is not capable to run news in 24 hour basis. “We’re trying to update our news every hour from 7am to 12midnight. Even Macau has not enough happenings. We may still add more city updates and international news to increase the news’ ratio. Our goal is to achieve 24-hour news in the coming future,” Leong addressed.
