Filmmakers Ada Li, Cheuk Cheung and Wong Siu Pong agree that documentaries from mainland China and Taiwan are different from Hong Kong’s due to various social backgrounds.

CNEX Foundation Manager Ada Li said filming a documentary is becoming a pop culture to widen audiences’ scope of the society, yet different places have different style of documentaries. Social phenomena, cultural backgrounds and political environment contribute to the difference. China, Taiwan and Hong and Kong are obviously the keen competitors to compare.

Li also said Taiwan is a petty bourgeois region that has higher social awareness and openness when compared to China. They are thus able to film documentary about some relaxing topics or personal interview in a freer way. This character is close to Hong Kong. However, Chinese documentary’s theme is relatively heavy like rural demolition issue.

Director of My Way Cheuk Cheung added it is very important to recognize the audience. Just because of the different social backgrounds in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, directors must make sure relationship between the film and the audience is clearly shown. We need to ask ourselves why the audience would feel like worthwhile to spend an hour watching the video,” said Cheuk.

As the Director of Fish Story, the local documentary about Children, Wong Siu Pong said documentary ideas are based on our daily life, directors must pay attention to what is happening around them and “documentary has little or even no restrictions so you can shoot what you like.” He also pointed out that the pace of life and the documentary rhythm are tightly related but there is no right or wrong for fast-paced or slow-paced. “How much your input is, how much your output will be,” said Wong.

Wong added young people can create or collect second-hand information, such as readings from newspapers, then further obtain first-hand information, like interviews to render the story a new perspective. He think that filming a documentary should be started by one self’s own story to move others.
