Documentary – a chance to understand

“A documentary is a bridge for me to understand Hong Kong” said Cheuk Cheung, Director of My Way when recounting on why he would start directing documentary and thinks that documentary has given him a chance to ask questions.

Everything starts from realization

Cheuk Cheung did not start as a documentary director after he graduated from the Hong Kong Academy of Arts but instead he tried directing feature short films then when reviewing his own works one day, realized that his works were so empty and failed to come out with a reason why people would want to watch his works, also, they all lacked a specific context, they could happen in anywhere for they had no relations with Hong Kong at all.

Documentary as a bridge of understanding

Cheuk regarded documentary as a bridge of understanding for it has let him understand Hong Kong, think about the questions he would not ask in the past but now he is asking them with his directed documentary, like in his recent documentary “My Way”, Cheuk is to ask why when one is doing something that is different from the mainstream will have to be discriminated and never be supported with the story of two males taking up the female role in Cantonese Opera.

Documentary is a self-understanding opportunity

Cheuk went on further with the notion of by directing a documentary, it is a good chance and opportunity for one to understand oneself for one can reflect his or her own when studying the story of another person, especially when a kind of interaction is involved in shooting a documentary.

Documentary prepares a feature film director

Cheuk encourages young people to give a try on a documentary project, especially those who desperately wants to become a feature film director. Cheuk believes as by producing a good feature film, one cannot escape from doing research and it is always better when the director can gain the first hand information then applies his own angle to understand the information, this understanding will then form the strong base of a moving feature film.
