“Producing a documentary helps me to understand a place more, it is worth to invest time on it,” a local director, Cheuk Cheung said. The CNEX Foundation now promotes documentary production to encourage more fresh directors to join the industry.

Cheuk pointed out that producing a documentary was not a boring process. Instead, it helps one to learn more about the society. Moreover, the experiences and stories learnt can be used when you are producing a drama. “ Writing a drama usually bases on some real cases and develop them,” he said.

To start with a documentary, pitching is the first step. “Pitching is an important step in producing a documentary. It helps to convince the producers about the value and worthiness of your story,” Wong Siu Pong, the director of Fish Story said. “ The message you want to bring out is an important element in a documentary.”

Pitching is a popular culture in Tai Wan, China and other foreign countries, but not in Hong Kong. “Here, most of the documentaries and television programmes are produced in-house or by acquisition from other places. Only RTHK practices pitching and outsourcing,” Ada Li, the CNEX Foundation Manager said. The consciousness of the pitching culture in Hong Kong is not high, and so does the demand for it.

As there were more digital channels, more variety of content would be demanded. The trend of pitching and outsourcing could be foreseen in the future. “ It is time to self-improve,” Li said.

Compared to the documentaries with Tai Wan and China, Li said that documentaries produced by Hong Kong people were more people-driven. They used to tell feature story driven by the main character. In Tai Wan, as their civic awareness is higher, their documentaries contain a sense of petti-bourgeoisie.

In China, as it is still developing under socialism, their documentaries concern more serious issues. Conflict and struggle between the city and rural area are always presented through the documentaries, e.g. the Foxconn workers. “Different political environment affects the feature of documentaries in different places,” she said.
