HKSYU, 06 Nov - Cheuk Cheng, the director of My Way, said documentary is an approach to have a profound understanding of Hong Kong.

“I think documentary is more difficult compared with drama,” said Cheuk, at Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday.

For drama, the producer could control the development of story. However, the producer turns to be passive when speak of documentary, because the scrip is the whole society. My Way is Cheuk’s the first documentary work. Cheuk, who used to make drama, realized that drama had no serious connection with Hong Kong society and the story seemed to make sence everywhere in the world. As a result, he decided to start make documentary.

Actually, documentary is uncommon in Hong Kong. Ada Li, manager of CNEX Foundation, considered that it’s due to the different culture background. Cheuk indicated that it’s a good chance for high-fliers, “ it costs a little to take up documentary.”

Different social phenomenon could result in different styles of documentary. For example, as a developing country, extreme disparity between the rich and the poor is one of the most serious social problems of Chinese. So that the theme may be heavy.
