Seven digital radio channels with 24-hour programming were launched by Digital Broadcasting Corporation (DBC) yesterday as the company looked to developing programs for the elderly and news, the chief executive said.

Owing to the conflicts among shareholders, DBC had stopped broadcasting for 3 months and resumed the operations in January this year, but it only provided limited services. Loh Chan, the chief executive of DBC, announced that 7 channels with 24-hour programs has officially launched since yesterday.

Loh emphasized that with the advent of the aging population in Hong Kong, the elderly programs and the up-to -date news reporting are the DBC future highlights. However, some may argue that the purchasing power of the elderly are inadequate to buy a new digital radio. Loh explained, DBC will have promotion schemes which cooperate with elderly homes and offer 50% discount for the elderly to buy a digital radio.

After the consolidation of DBC, Wong Cho Bau, the richest merchant of Shenzhen, has become the biggest shareholder of DBC. Some may worry the independency of DBC news because of Wong’s involvement. Loh explained, Wong is not in the board of directors, he is merely one of the shareholders, so he cannot affect the independency of DBC news. DBC will keep its news channel to be fair and neutral, Loh said.
