End of “Legco Review” does not affect the neutrality of RTHK

By ASHLEY HAU Siu-ki

NOV 20 - “Legco Review”, one of the longest-running public affairs shows on RTHK, will be replaced by a new one-on-one interview TV programme which was suggested by the Director of Broadcasting Tang Yun-kwong.

This news was confirmed by Ma Chim Wai, the Executive Producer of Legco Review yesterday in Shue Yan University.

Ma said the plan was proposed by Tang in an internal meeting in October this year. He continued that Tang thought “Legco Review” had duplicated with other public affairs programmes, such as “Headliner”, so he wanted to replace it with a new programme format like "On the Record" on TVB and broadcasted it in prime time of TV.

"If you have to 'give', then you have to 'take'," Ma said. He explained that if a new programme was added into the promgramme list, another programme inside the list then needed to take away. He thought it was an normal rule.

But he said the new programme suggested by Tang was fully incharged by his unit, Public & Current Affairs section. Therefore, they can use their professional news sense to invite suitatble guests. Ma said they would not be the mouthpiece of the government. They would also ask crtitical questions for Hong Kong citizens according to the issues each week.

Legco Review made its debut in April 1986. It is the only TV show dedicated to reporting on the Legislative Council.
