Sometimes, people may use public relations to describe someone who is thought to have attractive appearance but hollow inside. However, the Public Affairs Manager of Power Assets Holdings Ltd., Esme Lau, refuted this saying in an assembly of Hong Kong Shue Yan University, and clarified that, “Public relations is not a vase.”

If Esme needs to use some terms to describe the role of PR in a company, she will choose ‘eyes, ears, mouth and nose’ because she thinks that PR has a vital role in a company to receive opinons and send out messages to the public. “Public relations is a supporting department. For example, a television broadcast company’s main duty is to produce tv programmes, but the maintenance of reputation and crisis management are also important. Therefore, PR acts as a supporting role to deal with these matters. If a company can’t handle these kind of things well, it probably can’t be successful. Thus, PR is absolutely not a vase,” Esme said.

In addition, PR is a challenging work which has no formula to success. Esme said,” Every case has its own solution, so that you can’t use the same method to solve different problems. And it is also the fascinating point of being a PR.” She added, “ There is no a particular way to success in PR, so every PR is a lifelong learner.”
