‘In this recent years, esports develop rapidly,’ said by a technician.

Eric Yeung, a president of Esports Association Hong Kong, who gave a talk at Hong Kong Shue Yan University weekly forum. He shared his point of view on eSports development.

‘The Hong Kong government have put many effort on esports,’ Yeung said.

The First HK mega esports event was organised at Hong Kong Coliseum, it attracted more than 74 thousand online viewers in two days. Many sponsors support the event as well.

He said, esports contains two basic elements, which are ‘electronic’ and ‘sports’. ‘Electronic’ means it mainly applies information technology in progress. ‘Sports’ means a kind of sports competition project.

As the global games market earn about $140 billions a year, which equals to the GDP of Australia. Thus it can be predicted that esports is profitable.

‘The esports revenue rate increase rapidly, Yeung said, ‘from $492 millions in 2016 to $941 millions in 2018.’ It shows that many sponsor willing to invest in esports.

It is undoubtedly that young people tend to engage in esports. Data shows that 70% of the players are under ages of 35. Moreover, female players is increasing, the male to female ratio is 6:4, or even more balanced in the future, said Yeung.

He believes government’s support is important for esports development. He takes Japan as example.

Although Japan exports a lot of games, it didn't put much effort on esports. It is because the Japanese law regulated the awards should not over 10 thousand yen. It causes low business values so lack of inducement for people join it.

However, as the law changed, esports is now popular in Japan, and it chasing the world trend.

Yeung said, there is several competitive advantages for esports in Hong Kong, such as no censorship restriction on foreign games, riding on high growth of Asia’s esports market, and government’s support. --165009 2018年11月6日 (二) 17:29 (CST)
