Since the 90s, technology has been advancing at a great speed that, beyond doubt, has changed the whole world’s forms of communication and is believed to have affected the way that the news industry works.

May Chan, Director of News & Public Affairs Department of Hong Kong Commercial Broadcasting Limited, believes that the popularized use of the Internet has inarguably put forward and promoted the share of news and yet, leaves certain challenges for the industry to face.

‘With the advancement of technology and the wide use of the Internet, the news industry has to refine itself and progress the multimedia development accordingly,’ said Chan at a seminar held at Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday.

Aside from paying more focus on the multimedia development, the news industry has also been facing the problem of manpower shortage throughout the latest decade. ‘It’s mostly because of the keen competition among the industry. The field is notorious for its low salary and long working hours, together with its high requirements for multiple skills, it just doesn’t sound quite appealing,’ admitted Chan.

‘It’s not surprising at all to hear people shifting the job field to something more rewarding after several years of experience. The industry loses people at a rather fast rate,’ added Chan.

Though the news industry is currently facing a hard time dealing with media convergence and tackling the problems it has raised, Chan assured that the prospect should be hopeful and the industry will do fine. ‘Opportunities are for those who are well-prepared and creative. Only if you are willing to accept new challenges you can progress,' concluded Chan.
