HONG KONG, SEPT 25- “Financial information is the easiest and most valuable item to charge people for,” said Tim Chan, the executive chief editor of the Hong Kong Economic Journal (HKEJ), during a talk at Hong Kong Shue Yan University today.

Chan is a senior financial reporter who has work in the field for a quarter century. He joined HKEJ and started the website and online subscription business five years ago, despite pessimistic views from people in the industry.

“Everyone pointed out that the news can be found on Yahoo! News easily, and it is free,” Chan said, “We can barely see people reading a published newspaper in the MTR during the morning but watching the online version on the screen of their phones.”

After three months of operation, a total of 8,000 registrations for the online edition of HKEJ affirmed Chan’s unique vision. The profit was enough to cover the cost of the whole website. He stated that the growing subscription number has not stopped even today.

“Even those we made a 50% increment of subscription fee in the second year, the turnover rate was less than 2%. And there is more and more media started their online business nowadays,” said Chan.

Chan made a conclusion that the demand of news is increasing while the need of published newspaper is decreasing as technology grows. He emphasized the demand of financial information is the most important need in the field.
