Dr. Leung Chun Ying, the Convenor of the Non-official Members of the Executive Council, yesterday has participated in a general assembly held in Shue Yan University saying that the relative advantage of Hong Kong compared to the mainland China has been deteriorating although the present economy of it seems to be good apparently.

He said that Hong Kong was the middleman to fulfill the need of mainland from the foreign countries in the past. Years ago, there are HK businessmen importing seeds from Holland to mainland since there is a problem in seeds of China. However, the situation now is completely changed and the role of entrepôt of HK has faded, ‘The mainland China already has its own marketing network, technology and strategies.’, Leung said.

Leung told Shue Yan students that many HK factories set up in China has been suffering a great impact due to the rising cost in land, resources and manufacture. He added that the labor income of the grass-roots is not proportional to the development of the society since the amount of labor with income under $6000 has been increased from 420,000 to 530,000 from 2001-06. ‘The liquidity of Hong Kong with other cities in China does not exist’, said Mr. Leung,‘ The mainland workers cannot work and reside in HK while citizens in foreign countries like England may have those rights in their countries.

Dr. Leung stated that the government has the responsibility, power and budgets to decide the middle and long term development of HK to reduce the impact of the economy being marginalized. He urged that HK citizens need to be alert and foreseeable with the economic situation in HK.
