The emergence of local free newspaper threatens the printed industry; however, Jack Forest, editorial director of Timesquare Hong Kong, claimed today that the current printed market is still a favorable place for specialized magazines to survive.

With reference to past sales statistics of Timesquare- magazine for luxury watches, Forest discloses that although the readers pool for specialized magazines are focused and clustered, plummeting in readership from these magazines are still rarely seen.

‘We could observe that the sales figures for Timesquare remain stable and I believe this happens because contents in paid newspaper are easily replaceable from other media sources and what we are providing in the magazine are specialized knowledge that the readers could hardly access from other media vehicles,’ said Forest.

On the other hand, Forest points out another factor that determines whether the magazine could soldier on successfully.

‘Magazine producers should aware of the reading habits of Hong Kong people; it is widely known that Hong-Kongers seldom read, if editors follow the same or similar page designing principles from China or Taiwan where readers like to read tunes of texts in one single page to handle pages formatting in local magazines, they would probably die in near future.
