Experts reveal the two sides of surveillance camera

Government monitoring and surveillance camera have been a controversial issue regarding to the invasion of privacy. Expert said cultures among different countries can lead to both pros and cons of surveillance camera.


Benny Drescher, Business Development Asia-Pacific, INC Invention Center Aachen said each worker’s behaviour is tracked through camera in some manufacturers in Dongguan. However, he said that surveillance camera is not allowed to monitor workers in Europe, as it would cause the loss of privacy.


He said there is no sign of moral issue, as the companies aim to optimize their works, they are just going forward with the technologies.


Besides, Helen Meng, Professor of Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, CUHK said surveillance camera could maintain safety of people.


She said that she has been in Tsinghua University Smart Lab 10 years ago, and her students wanted to pick her up for safety, but there are no such things now because of surveillance cameras. “People are afraid of filming,” she said.


“People are afraid of filming,” she said. She said face detection can be done by the cameras, so people are more safe nowadays.


As artificial intelligence(AI) has been well-developed, people are worry about the threats that AI may bring to human, however, Charleston Sin, Executive Director, MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node said human can benefit from AI.


Sin used a applicaton called Woebot as example. He said 40% of US students encounter depression, and this app can help the students to overcome depression.


From this point of view, Sin believed that AI will be utilized as customer service in future. He also urge people to keep learning from technology and do not be scared.
