Extraordinary Makes Success

By Ivy Yau

HKSYU, 27 Mar - To be a good journalist, having good writing skills and language is most important, and that’s what most people think, however, the chairman of Thomson Reuters China, David Schlesinger, doesn’t feel the same way.

David Schlesinger shared his views of being a journalist in an assembly of HKSYU today. He is a successful journalist but surprisingly, he wasn’t a journalism student. “To stand out among the others, make yourself different by knowing something about something, for example, finance and politics. This is the way to success,” he said.

In the many years David works as a journalist, he had worked in mainland for years in 90’s, so he also mentioned the press freedom problem in China. He reckons that the freedom of press in mainland has already been loosened but undeniable. Beijing is still controlling and restricting news. He said, “The thing we do when reporting news in mainland is to report the facts and protect the sources in a right way, but not to self-censor”
