Former Anchor sees little self censorship

No significant difference in freedom of press has been found since handover.

By Anthony Wong

HKSYU, MAR 6-Despite criticisms towards media for their self censorship since the handover of HKSAR, Ivan Yau, a former reporter and anchor of TVB News, did not sense such scenario throughout past two decades.

Not only in recent times, has self censorship of news been a worry to the public since the handover of sovereignty of Hong Kong in 1997 because of the authoritarian governance of mainland China.

Yet, Yau did not see scientific proof of any significant decline in freedom of press through out the past decades.

‘It has been a criticism since 1997. However, media nowadays can still strongly criticize and reveal scandals of the government. The trend of reporting these pieces of news has even been soaring after the handover,’ said Yau.

According to him, the change in public attitude towards media might be due to the drastic change in the formation of government, which is under the sovereignty of a nation having different core values with Hong Kong. What’s more, as the closer interaction with media firms with mainland China, a slight change in reporting mode might occur, according to Yau.

However, he did not see these factors seriously suffocating Hong Kong's freedom of press.
