Technology in the modern world improves communication, therefore, everyone can be a reporter. David Schlesinger, chairman for Thomson Reuters China, said that journalists should catch up with the rapidly changing technology by adding values in order not to be left behind, when attending the general assembly of Hong Kong Shue Yan University this afternoon.

“Things happened like a train crash or an earthquake. Journalists were the witnesses to report cases 20 years ago. Without journalists in the past, news would not happen at all,” Schlesinger said, and added that there was millions of Internet users nowadays who could easily post messages and report the news as well. “It is more important that journalists should learn more reporting and writing skills to be professional”

He also stressed that the audience is important. “Remember the audience, think about what they want,” He suggested finding a dramatic point in news stories to enhance the character of each article.

“As a journalist, you have to tell the fact better than everyone else together equipped with knowledge but they don’t know the importance of accuracy,” said Schlesinger. He explained that accuracy would affect the prestige of the newspaper or news agency. As working in China, he said accuracy is the only element to consider if reporters want to avoid taking the risk of imprisonment. [How does accuracy protect against imprisonment?]
