【 15th April, 2014 Leung Nga Wing】An expensive ink-wash painting was accidentally thrown away after an auction. Famed local designer Kan Tai-keung, however, criticized local media for exaggerating the actual value of that piece of artwork and misrepresenting the real aesthetic value of arts to readers.

The painting named “snowy mountain” was created by Chinese artist Cui Ruzhou. It was sold at a price of over 3 million US dollars at an auction held in a local hotel. The art piece was later discovered to have accidentally thrown away by cleaners at the hotel.

Kan said he was disappointed not because a piece of art was discarded, but because local media have overstated the worthiness and importance of the painting, as well as misled readers about the real aesthetic and artistic value.

“Frankly speaking, that painting is a very ordinary art piece, but somehow it was sold at a high price of over 3 million US dollars,” he said. “I don’t think local media practitioners know what is art, for they have misconceived that it was a pity an extremely valuable and important artwork was lost, and have chosen this incident to be the headline.”

He also pinpointed that the media practitioners did not know how to comment on arts, and thus could not tell how this incident has affected Hong Kong and various artists.

Concerning the current trend of adopting abundant photos and graphics in newspapers, Kan said this was understandable for media need to use photos and graphics to impress readers and help telling the news story.

“Some people may think that it was too sensational to overuse photos and graphics in newspapers, but I think this is acceptable,” said Kan. “But the media need to respect the weaknesses when reporting certain issues and disasters. This is to keep their dignities and avoid them in becoming some sorts of consumer goods.”

He added that media should follow the codes of ethics and demonstrate good conducts when reporting news to the public.

Kan Tai-keung is a famous designer and Chinese ink-wash painting artist. He has won many international design and art creation awards.

Kan’s achievement has brought him a bronze and silver bauhinia star in 1999 and 2005 respectively.
