Financial journalists are easier to “survive” in media, Said an Experienced Financial Journalist

By Lam King Man Larry on 22nd April 2019

The career development of financial journalists must better than other journalists, said an experienced financial journalist.

"There are more support for financial news, for example many listed companies still sell advertisements on different media channels but political or current events are less likely to sell advertisements," said Leung Sam-yan, the founder of the Alpha Bull Limited.

Leung is a Hong Kong financial anchor. She hosts a financial programme called “Taste Money” everyday. She used to share her personal experiences of investing in stocks during the programme. The "Taste Money" financial programme provides the latest stock investment and financial information to those who are interested in investing in stocks.

Leung took Cable TV as an example. It wasted money on political news and it was financial loss every year. She said people mostly watched YouTube, but not TV nowadays.

"In the case of comparison, many people envied on financial journalists, because financial reporters can wear beautiful clothes to work in Central, while other reporters can only wait for a day in the factory areas," said Leung.

Leung also shared some experience of being a financial anchor, which being a financial anchor had to be sensitive to numbers and units, otherwise it would bring a range of consequences to the investors.

"If the information that the financial anchors said was wrong, he or she could not build trust and reputation to the audiences," said Leung.

The stock market is evolving at every moment. Apart from sensitive to numbers, a financial anchor had to be hard-working of reading stock materials to grasp the market fluctuation, Leung said.

There were some differences between a financial anchor and a financial host. The financial hosts were required to have a wide range of financial knowledge as their expectations were higher than the financial anchors, said by Leung.

"If a fresh graduate wanted to become a financial anchor or a financial host, the first thing they had to do is to download applications, such as ETnet and Sina Finance to know the basic stock knowledge, Leung said.
