China News Agency, which was known as a semi-official press agency, is now struggling to get rid of this image, reporting viewpoints sometimes against Beijing, such as covering the sensitive “June 4 candlelight vigils” for almost 5 years.

“I don’t disclaim our communist background. We have been striving for multi-angle reporting, no matter the opinion is for or against the government,” said Candy Lo, deputy chief editor of Hong Kong China News Agency(HKCNA).

The agency has touched the taboo June 4 vigils and the recent unrest in Ningpo, though in only a few sentences, but the public does not seem convinced by the effort. After admitting their shortcomings, Lo explained that the stereotypical image was a result of a lack of quotations by the local media, while some quotes were not attributed.

However, she was confident about the stance of HKCNA. She believed the media should give out more “positive energy”.“I believe every media company has their own side,” said Lo, “some of them care only the profit but not the social responsibility, which makes me worry.”
