First joke writer:Humor is a problem solver

'Lai Man Cheuck, a senior scriptwriter who is the first joke writer in Hong Kong, shared his believes in crisis management, said: " Humor is a problem solver.’’'

Lai Man Cheuk said the ultimate goal of Crisis management is to minimize the possible losses. ‘Sometimes, handling the crisis by a humorous perspective may have a good result.’ “Sometimes the failure of the crisis management is because of the wrong perception of the value” Therefore, he believed the best way to solve crisis is to keep positive.

Lai Man Cheuck described his first job, the first joke writer in Hong Kong, “My job is worked for a daily program, ‘’Enjoy Yourself Tonight’’. I had to write five jokes a day for seven years. Sometimes people did not satisfy, than I have to re-write it.” Yet, Lai found his own way to settle problems he faced. “Due to the training from the “Enjoy Yourself Tonight”, I am capable to create successful jokes which bosses will agree on them.” Lai said. Lai ‘s successfulness in this industry make people called him ‘the king of ideas”.

The quality of local television drama and variety shows has long been criticized for declining in recent years. Lai Man Cheuk said the decline is due to the environmental change in the industry. “As a program producer, putting the element like transvestite into the program is the fastest way to attract audience,” he believes that this is related to the cultural strategy and operation model of the television broadcast company. He believes that long-term interest will be affected if there is lack of considerate plan before the act.

Lai pointed out that there is a shortage of sciptwriter in Mainland. “A television drama sciptwriter usually get HK$12,000 for one episode in Hong Kong; but, the sciptwriters in Mainland get paid 2.5 times higher,” Due to the big contrast, Lai strongly recommended fresh graduates who are interested in scriptwriting should develop their careers in Mainland China.
