Sports can reflect cultural, social, politics and many other characteristics, said Wong Ka Ho, Sing Tao Daily sports reporter who reported FIFA World Cup 2018.

Speaking at a talk in Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Wong said, “sports are related with everything.”

Particularly the linkage of sports and politics, he said the contradictions between Saint Petersburg and Moscow are similar to the case of Hong Kong-mainland’s, which these two Russia cities both showed their dissatisfactions toward another during his interviews; while the unforgettable Soviet Union memories could be indicated from Russians’ selling Soviet Union Soccer sportswear.

“Histories are shown in sports too,” said Wong.

He said that he understands more about the difficult times during Croatian War of Independence broke out, when he accidentally met and interviewed Croatian football players outside the soccer field.

He said Croatia was originally not a popular team which gained much expectations, but at the end they entered the finals, therefore their country’s story became the attentions of media.

Besides politics and histories, current news and trends could be interesting angles to report a sport event.

He said Thailand fans’ passion was in contrast with the boring France-Belgium match when he wrote the story, as youth soccer team and coach were rescued from the Thailand cave on that day before the match.

When asked about government support on E-sport development, Wong expected government do not be conservative or complacent with emerging sports.

“Football without fans is nothing,” he quoted the famous saying from Jock Stein and asked audience how much they understand and show their support to local sport sector.

He said healthy sports environment development requires different parties, include locals and government’s support as well as sportsmen’s efforts.
