Some say after Hong Kong was handed over to China in 1997, media’s self-censorship has worsened. However, former senior anchor and reporter Ivan Yau Man-wah did not agree with this statement.

Yau mentioned that self-censorship in media has been a controversial issue of all-time in the city. “It was a hot topic when I was still a reporter,” said Yau in an assembly in Shue Yan University on Tuesday, Mar 6, 2012.

Yau joined Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) in 1995 and became a well-known anchor. In 2010, he left a Macau TV station and joined the Sino Group to work as the Assistant General Manager of the Corporate Communications Department.

He believed that there is no such self-censorship in media in the city. “I did not find any scientific proof of freedom degradation of press before and after 1997,” said Yau.

Yet, Yau remarked that after the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong in 1997, Hong Kong has more interactions with Mainland China. Hence, the media might have more things to consider. “It is common that different organizations, reporters and editors have their own standpoints,” said Yau.

He emphasized that as long as it is the truth, journalists should endeavour to report the news. “If your boss does not agree with you, you should quit your job and find another boss,” Yau said.

Good work, only a few mistakes, otherwise good attention to detail. Keep it up!
