Former news presenter Ivan Yau Man-wa claims that there is no significant self censorship among local media after Hong Kong sovereignty was returned to China.

Yau worked for TVB News for 10 years since 1995 while he has covered stories about the handover in 1997. He said that he does not see any “scientific data” that shows local media’s self censorship has been severe during his journalistic life before and after Hong Kong is ruled by Chinese government.

“All media must have their own stance,” said Yau who is now the assistant communications manager for property developer Sino Group.

Yau explained it is the change of the envronment and therefore media may cover stories from other angle. [How is this different from self-censorship?]

“If you think you got a true story, there’s nothing else to be care,” he told the journalism students at a university sharing session.

But Yau noted that there is no way to resist the requirements from news directors. He suggested those future journalists to follow the values that the media organization bears. "If you cannot stand with it, just switch to another organization that shares the values as you have."
