Frederick Ma Si-hang, the non-executive Chairman of the board of directors of the Corporation, said he would never support the independent movement of Hong Kong.

Ma said he would be against the idea of Hong Kong independent movement because it violated the Basic Laws. “The idea is unrealistic and will arise conflict and cleavage to the society”, said Ma. He added that the idea of Hong Kong independent movement was sensitive to the central government and would cause harm to the society.

As a former government official, Ma said, “I am the first one to create the history of apology among the government officials”. He also said being a government official must be responsible to the public. Ma added that he apologised to the public not because of the errors they made, but to eliminate the public’s unhappiness.

When asked why he has decided to join the governmental affairs since 2002, “I am a restless person and I will not stay in my comfort zone”, said Ma. Therefore, he took the challenging position of being the non-executive Chairman of the board of directors of the MTR Corporation.
