Freedom of press is being improved in China

2008-04-16

An experienced journalist said there is no absolute freedom of press in media especially in China but the situation in mainland will be changed by their efforts and hardworking in the future.

Mr. Li Xie, Deputy Controller of Shenzhen Media Group, said the speed to develop the liberty in China is not as fast as USA. “China is a traditional country, so it needs a period to develop the freedom of press. Since the innovation, China is improving a lot and also stepping on the right track.” But he reminded that China will not become another USA because of different culture.

In mainland China, CCTV is a mouthpiece of central government and many offical news are always provided by government but the role has changed now. “CCTV is a mouthpiece of government since 1979 and all the resources and officials belong to government. After 1979, CCTV maintained their role but also satisfied the public with more socio-economic news.” Li pointed out the changing point is to make profit since 1993. “CCTV needed to improve the quality to gain more audience. Comparing with China, media in Hong Kong was always a commercial media and even a business.”

Moreover, Li believes there is a huge difference between mainland and Hong Kong. “Hong Kong journalists have worldview and impartial viewpoint to handle news. I believe mass media in Hong Kong is the second best in Asia, only worse than Japan,” said Li. “The reporting in Hong Kong is more objective and always take account of “the fourth power” but China reporting always have a significant tendency in stance and concern of ruling party.” Therefore, many readers still feel mainland media as a tool of propaganda.

More importantly, Li felt disappointed that there is a limit of china media that journalists don’t understand what news they cannot report and the consequence after they reported. “We are afraid of it but the situation seldom happens in Hong Kong.”
