Geordie Toh: Rule by Law Is Hong Kong’s Core Value

Reported by Alan Yu

Geordie Toh, a law consultant of an Internet company, thought that the case should be judged according to law even though the outcome might not satisfy most of the Hong Kongers, such as the issue about non-citizenship pregnant mothers. He stressed that rule by law was the core value of Hong Kong.

Geordie Toh gave a speech in Hong Kong Shue Yan University on the Tuesday. Recently, a critic commented that the verdict about non-pregnant mothers done by Court of Final Appeal was not corrected. He also criticized that some Hong Kongers abused judiciary procedure. Toh thought that the claim of the critic was illogic. The reason was that plaintiff did not necessarily win the court forever. If a verdict of a court was bias, the losers could make a judiciary appeal to fight for the justice. Moreover, the court should be judged according to the article of law but not the benefits. If people thought that some articles were not suitable, they should correct the articles by legislation procedure. Otherwise, it would destroy the core value of law, even the core value of Hong Kong. Toh appealed that Hong Kongers should treasure the rule the spirit of rule by law. It was not a matter that could be built up by economy but the quality of the people.
