Gerry Ho: Scandal makes celebrities more famous in West

Gerry Ho who’s the managing editor of batgwa.com runs the entertainment news website for two years. Today, Ho gave a talk at Shue Yan University to explain the different consequence of scandal happened on celebrities in Hong Kong and West. Ho also suggested some tips for journalism students how to interview with celebrities to make them willing to share their true stories and there tips of being a journalist.

Edison Chen scandal VS Cocaine Kate

Ho took Edison Chen scandal and Kate Moss as an example to explain the different consequence of scandal happened on celebrities. In Hong Kong, when sexual photos spread in Internet, female stars were all hiding from the media. Edison Chen even stepped away from the Hong Kong entertainment industry because of the scandal. However, a scandal happened on a supermodel Kate Moss brought totally different consequence in West. Everyone knew Kate Moss took drugs but the scandal made her income doubled and more famous. Ho gave another example to explain, Rebecca Loos reported by media that she was David Beckham’s mistress, after that, Rebecca had interviews with newspapers , magazines and television programmes. Rebecca became a celebrity overnight. This showed a big contrast of how scandal affected the celebrities in Hong Kong and West.

Honest and trust

Ho thought that honest and trust are very important elements when interviewing celebrities. A media should be honest and then trusted by celebrities, they will then willing to share their stories and media should report them honestly. A media should build their reputation and never breaks their promises. Ho said that body language can help the interview more smoothly.

3 tips for journalists

The first one is build your contacts book since relationship is very important in Journalism industry. The second one is keeping your promises, for example being on time when you have interviews with celebrities. Otherwise it will damage your reputation. The last one is be fearless to report the news.
