Ho Yuet-fung, the former managing director of CBS Broadcast International Asia Inc, CBS INC., United States, feels frustrated about the TV industry when attending the general assembly of the Department of Journalism and Communication of Hong Kong Shue Yan University today. “The average quality of TV drama is really bad nowadays,” she added the reasons are due to the lack of competition between the TV stations, the extremely low cost and the insufficient time for creativity.

“The working condition in 70s was great that there were research department and script department in the TV drama stream. The research department would richen our script and we (script writer) were given more than one month to do information research and produce one and a half hours TV programme per week,” Ho Yuet-fung recalled. However, the working condition is worse than before and the script writer have to produce three hours TV programmes per week. She believes that it will seriously affect the room of creativity for the script writer.

“When Heaven Burns” arouse great public attention recently, although the drama did not have a good rating, it gains much audience admiration, especially among the youth. Ho Yuet-fung suggests the TV station should hire more young script writers to apply fresh elements into the drama.
