There is a gossip saying Tim Chan, the ex-vice editor in chief of Apple Daily, left his former workplace because of the boss, Jimmy Lai Chi Ying. Chan, when attending the assembly talk at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, denied the rumors, and said, “We didn’t have conflict at all.”

The rumors said that although Lai is the founder of Apple Daily, he is not editor in chief or principal. With his business background, Lai ran the newspaper with absolute power which left little space for the journalists and editors. The conflict between Lai and Chan was that Lai wanted to reform the finance and economics section, which was under Chan, but Chan insisted his point of view and rejected Lai’s suggestion. As a boss, Lai used political tricks in the office and made Chan leave, together with his wife, a senior journalist in the political section.

“No, we didn’t have conflict at all,” said Chan. “We left because we already served the company for quite many years, and it’s time to have a change and that’s normal.”

Chan said he likes the paper because it reflects the reality of Hong Kong. “You can read high toned articles by Dong Qiao (Principal of Apple Daily), and read the adult page at the same time,” said Chan. He thought it was like the society, different things happening at the same time.

Also, Chan said we can never ignore the power of the paper, as it is the most powerful arousing force towards social problems, just like in the case of national education.
