U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong Assistant Public Affairs Officer Scott Robinson said in a university talk that social media has become an important platform for governments to communicate with and reach the public.

“Social media is everywhere and more government tried to use social media to update the information regularly,” Robinson said.

He said social media is an effective way to reach and send out messages, but there also is a challenge to government as it cannot be control.

“We received some negative messages on the Facebook page of the U.S. Consulate General. Some people do not like the U.S. government. But we cannot delete them. As a government, we need to understanding and accepting the comments. It shows the freedom of speech ” He said.
