Hong Kong film industry is now facing the turndown period, the government should give more support to this industry, says a retired professor.

“The government provide one billion to Hong Kong film industry, the money is not only provided for making film, but also contains for film festival, film making,” said Cheuk Pak Tong, a Professor Emeritus of Hong Kong Baptist University. He believed that Hong Kong movies promoted Hong Kong status and value to the international, Hong Kong became famous was because of the film industry. The government should provide more resources to the industry since Hong Kong had many potential directors, he said.

He is a member of the Hong Kong Film Development Council, and he was the founder of the Academy of Film in HKBU. One of his famous works was Hong Kong New Wave Cinema in 1979-2000.

“There are many Hong Kong mature directors go to the mainland or the mainland companies find them to film,” he said. The directors could make diversified movies in mainland China since Hong Kong film industry quite standardised, the directors didn’t want to do something special due to Hong Kong culture and status, he said, who was speaking at Hong Kong Shue Yan University talk today.

Hong Kong had a different movie market compared to mainland China, the highest box office movie in China had few people watch in Hong Kong, he said. “Hong Kong is lack of market because the movies cannot get into China’s market,” he said. Many Hong Kong movies didn’t pass the check and enter China’s market, so the movies missed the market of Taiwan and Southeast Asia at the same time, and Hong Kong film market was not large enough, so the directors didn’t want to put a lot of costs to film the movies, he said.

He felt worried to the future film industry because Hong Kong did not have enough homegrown films, if Hong Kong film industry could film 60 to 80 movies a year, the industry might go back to the peak period, he said.--165031 2019年2月19日 (二) 22:40 (CST)
