Mr Tang Shu Wing, artistic director of Tang Shu-wing Theatre Studio, said that by subsidizing the arts, the government is actually treating the industry as a community service, which needs to be changed.

His comments came after the government announced to provide further support for the Cultural and Creative Industries, for instance the government are planning to change the club house of the former Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in Oil Street, North Point into a visual arts exhibition and activity centre.

Tang Shu Wing shared his views on “Presentation Skills and Body Language” with students at Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday. He said that people cannot criticize government for not providing support for artists. Actually it subsidies them a lot by providing venues and training courses. However, he show disagreement on the attitude of government treating the cultural and creative industries as servicing the community instead of focusing on the art pieces.

As the government aiming at servicing the community while supporting the industry, the focus are on the numbers of production, the creativity of the products and the number of people who can benefit from the subsidy. The five elements that are important to the industry and the art pieces are being ignored, including the freedom of expression, the common value that stakeholders trying to achieve, the model as a economic activities and these art activities as tool for communicating values.

In order to change the model of development of cultural and creativeindustry, he advised that artists need to develop long term but popular programmes. But he emphasized that industrialization is not equal to commercialization. --115126 2013年4月17日 (三) 11:58 (UTC)
