“Hong Kong’s small and medium enterprises are lacking behind, the Great Bay Area can foster Hong Kong enterprises’ competitiveness,” said Jefferson Wat, President of SME Global Alliance.

Speaking at a talk in Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Wat says Hong Kong small and medium enterprises have nearly zero application in innovative technologies, despite Hong Kong has an edge on her geographical location.

“Will you (Shue Yan students) dismantle your family’s washing machine? Urbanization is a problem causing Hong Kongers staying in comfort zones.” Wat said. He thinks Hong Kong lacks of environment in developing innovative technologies; while Great Bay Area is a favourable opportunity for boosting local innovation development.

To cooperate with Chinese government’s plan on developing Great Bay Area, he suggests enterprises introduce emerging technologies by attracting foreign professionals, which Technology Talent Scheme is in the right direction to nurture local professionals. “STEM education is a possible solution to promote innovative learning,” he added.

Despite Hong Kong’s disadvantage in innovative development, he still believes Hong Kong’s geographical advantages.

He said, “A lot of foreign businessmen will choose Hong Kong as the ‘first stop’ in the Great Bay Area, it therefore will not decrease Hong Kong’s competitiveness.”

He says Hong Kong’s fascinating low-tax-rate and her simple tax system are beneficial to foreigners. However, to grasp Great Bay Area’s opportunities, locals should learn foreign tax systems by communicating with Chinese and Western businessmen, he added.

Wat is experienced in developing and inventing innovative technologies, including Chinese computer system in 1983 and trading blockchain of diamond assessment in this year.
