Greater Bay area give hope to Hong kong dispirited Film’s Industry.

“With 11 cities including 70 to 100 million of audiences, Greater Bay Area provide a platform for developing creative and art industry. Greater Bay Area also desire great movies,” said Professor Cheuk Pak Tong, a professor emeritus of the Hong Kong Baptism University.

Professor Cheuk was a committee member of the Hong Kong Film Development Council (HKFDC). He was also the director of the Academy of Film of the Hong Kong Baptism University from 2009 to 2014.

Check said that there were 200 to 300 local movies were produced every year in 1980s, which was the golden age of Hong Kong Film Industry. However, the industry had declined since 1993. The number of local movies produced in Hong Kong was only around 30 per year, said by Cheuk.

“Movie companies are not willing to put too much capital in Hong Kong local movie because the market in Hong Kong is too small and they think it is not worth to invest a lot of money to movie which do not have big audience market,” Cheuk said.

Due to no investment, Hong Kong local movie could not have enough resources to invite starred actors so that is more difficult to attract audience to support the movie, said Cheuk.

The glory days of Hong Kong films were not likely to return while the mainland movie industry was booming, he also added.

“As Mainland movies grab a lot of attention recently, I can predict that the rapid rise of the mainland’s film industry will exceed New York and Japan in the future,” Cheuk said.

Cheuk. said that It will be appreciated for Hong Kong’s film industry if China’s film industry grows stronger. Therefore, There should be more cooperation in order to step forward.

“The United States has Hollywood to produce good movie, Greater Bay area also can be the “Hollywood” in China.” Check said.
