HKSYU—MAR 13 Last year, the Guo Meimei Scandal in China has put the country’s charities in a predicament. Ms Guo, a 20-year old woman who claimed to be the General Manager for the Red Cross Commerce, show(ed) off her wealth by posting pictures of her Maserati and Lamborghini Cars, Brand name handbags on the Chinese version of Twitter, Sina Weibo.

As a result, the scandal has deterred people from donating money to charities even through the Red Cross had clarified that Ms Guo has no any relation with the organization at all. The charitable giving in China dropped significantly after the scandal.

However, when most of people see the scandal as a serious crisis, Louie, H S Tong, the Manager for Community Chest, a charity in Hong Kong, sees it a great opportunity to gain public trust. “We can grab this opportunity to make positive promotion by telling the donors the operation of the organization, in order to increase the transparency, as well as to resume the trusting relationship with public.” expressed the manager.

Apart from grabbing the opportunity, Louie, H S Tong hoped that the Public could give more time to the Charities in China, as they are still in the early stage(s). Things will get better in the future when they become more systematic.
